A Day In The Life Of …….

Many ask me “What is it like homeschooling with four children?”

I  love to read about other homeschool families, and how they work and live through out their days. I actually got much advise from just reading their websites.

So today, you get to read about this busy homeschool mama and how we usually go about our days!  ……… key word, usually.

I’m a morning person, and if I haven’t been up all night with a child, I often wake up around 6 – 6:30am. This is before all the children, and I love it because it allows me to prepare breakfast, coffee, and have some quiet time with my bible!

7am – Children start trickling down stairs for breakfast.

7:30 – 8:15am – Everyone cleans their rooms, does their hygiene routine and get dressed.

8:30am – All children get their goal sheets and work books for the day, and then we do our character building and bible story.

9am – 10am – We do math,spelling, phonics and grammar.

10am – Break (snack, a run outside etc…)

10:15am – Language, unit study, any fun learning games.

12 noon – Lunch (their favourite part of the day)

12:30 – 1:30pm – Reading time/ Nap time (my favourite part of the day)

1:30 – 2:30 – We do any work we didn’t get to, or anything we weren’t able to finish.

Around 2:30…. we finish up any chores that need to be done, and the girls practice piano while I at least start dinner. I regularly take them out to the park after this time.

4 – 4:30pm I finish preparing dinner while the kids play or  my older girls will work on some computer learning games which they love.

schedule

There are a variety of things we do in an evening. Some nights are complete family nights, where we will walk, play outside or do family errands. Other evenings we are out at church, bible study or opening our home to guests.

Ultimately, our days can change in an instant! A sick child, or an unexpected rainy day will throw us off our ‘schedule’.  But no worries, I try and stay calm, and not get too rigid and use our schedule as a guideline. The beauty of homeschool is that things can be altered easily.

I am usually ‘burnt out’ by the end of the day, and love to go to bed early (9:30pm)……. Cheesy, I know, but it works for me.  And I have an amazing husband who works with me as a team, and both of us work in some down time.

I also cherish each sweet hug and smile at the end of the day from all the children. It’s a blessed thing!!

So there you have it, a basic week-day in the life of this homeschool mama.

What are your days like?

  1. For the last 8 years I have homeschooled 4 kids…next year I go down to 1 kid and 1 toddler..it is going to be weird and bizarre and I’m sure I’ll miss these hectic days.

  2. I love reading about other homeschool families also! Great realistic schedule you have……kinda makes me wish I were more of a morning person 🙂 Thanks for sharing. ~Blessings~
