Oxybenzone!! Ahhhhhhh
I’ve been reading that this one word is NOT a good one. Apparently this ingredient is in a lot of store bought sunscreens.
As I have been reading about protecting our skin, I chose to be creative and make our own sunblock. I thought it would be neat to do with the kids!
I totally believe in getting Vitamin D, and having a healthy exposure to the sun (in fact, everyone should have 10 minutes of UN-protected sun exposure each day) but when we’re out for long periods of time in the summer, protection from burns is a great idea.
Here is my recipe:
- 3/4 Cup Coconut Oil
- 2 Tbsp Shea Butter (or another thick cream)
- 2 Tbsp Zinc Oxide
- 5 Drops of your favourite Essential Oil (for scent)
I doubled this recipe for my big family!
Measure coconut oil, shea butter (or cream) in a mason jar. Place a saucepan with 2 inches of water in it on stove over medium/low heat. Place jar in saucepan and stir contents until ingredients start to melt. Once all ingredients are melted, add the zinc oxide and stir well to combine (We shook our jar a lot!)
Place in refrigerator for an hour, then store in a cool place.
And there you have it! A moisturizing sun-block ….. toxin free!!
Enjoy! and have fun in the sun.
Great to see you back Kait 🙂
Love the recipe. Pinning on a couple of my boards!
